John Rogers named 2019 Nakamura Award winner

John A. Rogers, director of SQI’s Center for Bio-Integrated Electronics (CBIE), will receive a 2019 Nakamura Award from the American Association for Advances in Functional Materials (AAAFM) for “his pioneering contributions to the flexible, stretchable and wearable electronic systems for healthcare and exploratory neuroscience.”

Named after Nobel Prize winner Shuji Nakamura, the inaugural award will be presented at the AAAFM-UCLA Conference on Functional Materials from August 19-22 in Los Angeles. It also comes with a $5,000 prize.

In addition to directing CBIE, Rogers is the Louis Simpson and Kimberly Querrey Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and a professor of Biomedical Engineering, Neurological Surgery, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical and Computer Engineering at Northwestern University. He has published more than 650 papers and is a co-inventor on more than 100 patents.

According to AAAFM’s award announcement, Rogers’ “extraordinary innovations could help revolutionize the future of healthcare and personal medicine.”

Rogers has received numerous other honors and awards for his work, including the Lemelson-MIT Prize, the MacArthur Fellowship and the Smithsonian Award for American Ingenuity in the Physical Sciences. Most recently, he was awarded the 2019 Benjamin Franklin Medal in Materials Engineering.
